Jorinde VOIGT

Introduction

Jorinde Voigt's approach raises the medium to a whole new level. Instead of traditional representative drawings, her works present drawn systems that map out certain aspects of her subject or their interrelationships. Her subjects are sometimes fragments of observable reality, but could just as well be her interpretation of a process, a musical composition, a literary work, a natural phenomenon or a thought . Voigt's drawings represent the complex, visual outcome of her interpretation or registration of these subjects, often worked out simultaneously in various dimensions, by means of arrows, terms, figures, rotations, diagrams, etc... Her work appears to be both conceptual and lyrical, Voigt using drawing and writing as a kind of gestural action, improvising at will, creating collisions, rotations, and divisions that spring forth from her interwoven thought and drawing processes. Voigt's drawings can be read, interpreted, and aesthetically enjoyed like music; understanding and enjoying their structure is more important than understanding the subject itself.

Jorinde Voigt had solo exhibitions in 2012 with 'Systematic Notations’ at the NCA Nevada Museum of Art, with ‘Konnex' at the Lisson Gallery, London and at David Nolan Gallery, New York. She also presented a solo show at the Von der Heydt-Museum in Wuppertal in 2011 and the Gemeentemuseum The Hague in 2010 (with "STAAT/Random I - XI").
In 2012, she won the Paris Guerlain price for drawing.
Recent group exhibitions have included the ‘3rd Moscow International Biennale for Young Art’ and ‘Made in Germany 2' at the Sprengel Museum, Hannover, both in 2012. Before that, she was already on view at the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, in Deurle, Belgium (‘Re/pro/ducing Complexity’, 2011) and in 2010 she was selected for ‘The Future Generation Art Prize' of the Pinchuk Art Center in Kiev, Ukraine.
